Attendance Policies

General Attendance Policies

Regular attendance and participation at school are crucial to success at EMS. School begins at 7:50 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. on Fridays. Students are allowed in the building 20 minutes before school starts, and must leave the building and grounds within 15 minutes of school ending (unless on approved business). Each student is expected to be in class every period of the day unless properly excused. When students are absent for legitimate reasons (illness, medical/dental appointments, bereavement, weddings, special religious observance, etc.), the parent or guardian must call the attendance office at (801)826-7010. Failure to notify the school of parent-excused absences may result in contact from an administrator and, for extreme cases, a referral to truancy court. Students must make up all missed work according to school policy.

Tardy Policy

There is a five-minute passing period between each class. Students are expected to be prepared with appropriate materials, in their seats, and ready to work when the tardy bell rings. Parents will be notified when a student’s tardiness is excessive. Extreme cases of tardiness will be referred to the administration for disciplinary action. Please be aware that check-ins with a parent note for sleeping in or student-caused problems will not be excused.

Truancy Policy

State law requires that students attend school every class and every day unless there is a valid reason; otherwise, the absence is considered unexcused. Truant students will be referred to the administration for disciplinary action, which may include a parent conference, in-school suspension, referral to truancy school, and/or the juvenile court system. A student is considered truant if he/she:

• Leaves school without checking out through the attendance office.

• Leaves school without parental permission.

• Arrives at school, but does not attend classes.

• Obtains permission to go to a certain place, but does not report there.

• Stays home without the parent’s knowledge or valid excusal.

• Leaves class without permission.

• Arrives at school late having missed one or more classes without a valid parent excusal.
