Eastmont Middle will temporarily pivot to remote learning when classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, after Winter Recess.
The remote-learning schedule has been put into place to provide construction crews time to complete repairs to the school’s basement flooring, which was damaged by flooding during Winter Recess.
Typically, these types of repairs can be undertaken while school is in session, but construction crews have found small amounts of asbestos in an old adhesive that was located beneath some of the floor tiles that are being removed.
In order to continue with the repairs, Canyons District has hired a certified company to perform asbestos monitoring and mitigation, which can’t be done while employees and students are in the building.
Crews are working around the clock to complete the mitigation and repairs as quickly as possible.
More information is forthcoming about how soon Eastmont will be able to return to in-person learning.
Parents were notified on Friday, Dec. 30 about the temporary remote-learning schedule through emails, texts, and robocalls. In the coming days, Eastmont families will receive more information about where students can obtain school meals and any needed Chromebooks and learning materials when classes resume after the holiday break.
Teachers will work with students to make sure they have what they need to learn from home.
In addition, all after-school activities will be canceled until further notice.
At this time, no one is permitted to enter the school building. School personnel are working on a plan to return student property left in the building over Winter Recess.
