Safety First

Posted in News & Announcements

Join us in Keeping Canyons District's Schools Safe
Our school works hard to prepare for and prevent emergency situations and we’re encouraged by statistics that show schools are still among the safest places for children. Reports of bullying and victimization at the nation’s schools are on the decline. Nevertheless, schools are the heart of a community, and must often serve as the linchpin of a community’s response to an array of emergencies. This is where a “safety-first” mindset and emergency-preparedness pay off, and why it’s important that all of us be vigilant. Canyons District's employees undergo training each year and participate, along with students, in school emergency drills. August and September are the months for holding fire drills (see below). In the coming year, we'll be sending information about CSD's safety protocols home to families. We encourage parents to familiarize themselves with this information and discuss it at home. If you have children in one of our schools, tell your child that the most important thing to do in an emergency is to follow the directions of their principal, teachers and school staff. It’s important to reassure them and let them know that you have confidence in the training that school staff have received. And, remember if you see or hear something that makes you feel unsafe, report it to your school principal or through the anonymous crisis and safety tip line, SafeUT.

Welcome to Cross Country for the 2018-2019 school year!  Our first cross country meeting will be 8/28 at 3 PM in the library.  We will not run at this first meeting, we will give you a waiver that need to be signed and an information sheet to take home to your guardian(s).

Your coaches this year are Ms. Miles and Mr. Steffanic. We hope this provides you an opportunity to compete in an activity that promotes a healthy lifestyle, leadership, development and teamwork.  We will hold practices Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4. We meet dressed to run on the lower field. There is water at the drinking fountain inside the door, if you want other water, bring a water bottle.  The longest distance we run is 3 miles. We begin each practice with a warm up lap, stretches, a run (or running activities) then end with stretches. Our first practice will be September 4th. We have two competitions each year, the quad (4 school race: ours will be against Draper Park, Indian Hills, & Albion) and the district (all middle schools in the district) race:

QUAD meet is at Indian Hills on September 20th, it’s usually 1.6 miles.  All students compete.

DISTRICT meet is at Union Middle School on Saturday, October 13th at 9:00 am, the top 3 boys and the top 3 girls from each grade level compete in the district meet.

We will run/train indoors if it’s raining hard or if air quality is bad.  Thank you for your support!  If you have any questions, please give us a call 801-826-7000.
