Background: Ms. Shurtz is originally from Wyoming, but has lived in a few states and overseas. She and her husband have enjoyed their move to Utah and are still exploring the state. Since moving to Utah, they have added two very playful cats to their family, Persephone and Houdini.
Education: Black Hills State University- Bachelors of Science Elementary Education with Middle School Science, Social Science and Language Arts endorsements. Black Hills State University- Secondary English Certification. Montana State University- Graduate Certificate School Library Media Specialist.
Experience: Ms. Shurtz has a variety of experiences. She taught 11th grade English at Minico High School in Rupert, Idaho. She also taught 10th and 11th grade English at Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wyoming. While achieving her dream of living overseas, Ms. Shurtz taught 7-10 English and 8th grade World History in Kuantan, Malaysia at the International School of Kuantan. After that she taught 7-10 Middle Years Program and 11 Diploma Program in Surabaya, Indonesia at Sekolah Ciputra, an International Baccalaureate school. After returning to the US, she taught 7th and 8th grade Cambridge Language Arts at White Cliffs Middle School in Kingman, Arizona for four years before moving to Utah to teach at Eastmont.
Hobbies: Reading, writing, making jewelry, hiking, white water rafting, painting, cross country skiing, disc golf, traveling, & photography, and attending Utah Jazz games on a regular basis. Ms. Shurtz is also an active member of Ekpe Udoh’s (Utah Jazz player #33) book club. She also is a member of the Salt Lake City Genre Writers chapter where she is working on writing a variety of pieces, including a novel, and hopes to have some of them published.
